EXCLUSIVE: Laurieann Gibson, choreographer of stars such as Lady Gaga, Megan Thee Stallion and Britney Spears, has teamed up with Sky-backed producer Catalina Content to develop a new talent format.
Gibson, who was also a judge at So you think you can dance, works with Jeff Collins, who previously ran Dance Moms producer Collins Avenue, on Icons.
The Project is an archery talent competition designed to uncover and cultivate the world’s next pop star through intensive training camp.
Gibson previously worked with Collins on Lifetime’s Dance Moms as a choreographer for Abby Lee Miller’s Elite Competition team and choreographed videos such as Missy Elliott’s The Rain (Supa Dupa Fly), Lady Gaga’s Poker Face and Bad Romance, and Spears’ Piece of Me Tour.
She will be the judge and executive producer of Icon, where she, alongside various famous judges, will select 11 artists to participate in an arduous and transformative 11-week artist development camp to challenge and elevate their artistic talent as a singer, dancer and performer. The show will look at the blood, sweat and tears behind its methodology with an artist scoring a development chord.
Collins (pictured), who left Collins Avenue in 2020 before the collapse of backer Kew Media, launched Catalina last year with support from Sky Studios. The Los Angeles-based unscripted producer has already secured 85 hours of programming, including Popular for oxygen and Powerful outsiders for Discovery +.
Laurieann Gibson said, âArtist development is key to the evolution of the music industry today and the trajectory of a recording artist. Without the development of the artist, there is no sustainability and longevity for the artist, his vision, the process and the music. Real icons are built in the process, and my methodology is that process. Singers are born, but are they built to be an icon? “
“Icon departs from the traditional competitive format which seeks the next best singer; all of our performers will already have award-worthy vocal talent, however, they need polish and presence guidance to capture and capture global attention, âadded Jeff Collins, president of Catalina Content. âThe breadth of Laurieann’s experience coupled with her track record to create legend after legend is unmatched. It’s intoxicating to see her inspire such artistic genius.
Gibson is represented by Maximum Artist Group, APA and Abrams Garfinkel Margolis Bergson.
